This December marks a major milestone for the Financial Planning Standards Board (FPSB) – 20 years of advancing excellence in financial planning across the globe. Since 2004, FPSB has elevated financial planning into a trusted, globally recognised profession, underpinned by the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ certification. Through its network of 27 member organisations, including FPSB Ireland, the board has set high standards for ethics, competence, and client-focused advice, ensuring planners make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.
FPSB has consistently raised the bar by emphasising technical expertise, ethical integrity, and an understanding of clients’ needs and behaviours. Innovations like the Psychology of Financial Planning have helped financial planners deliver advice that connects deeply with clients’ goals and values. Combined with a focus on professional development, CFP® professionals have become trusted partners, guiding individuals and families through life’s financial complexities with clarity and confidence.
FPSB Ireland: Milestones and Momentum
While FPSB celebrates globally, Ireland has its own success story to tell. Since joining the network in 2008, FPSB Ireland has worked tirelessly to advance financial planning and, this year, achieved a remarkable milestone – surpassing 1,000 active CFP professionals. This achievement highlights a growing community of skilled advisers who are empowering Irish individuals, families, and businesses to make confident financial decisions.
This progress is supported by FPSB Ireland’s Strategic Plan for 2028, launched earlier this year. The plan focuses on building awareness, improving access to certification, supporting professionals in their careers, and setting and upholding the highest standards. These efforts ensure that Ireland’s financial planning profession not only meets international benchmarks but leads the way in professionalism, trust, and innovation.
Preparing for the Future
Looking to 2025, FPSB’s updated Global Financial Planning Standards will come into effect. With an emphasis on “Knowing, Doing, and Being,” these standards blend technical knowledge, practical application, and ethical behaviour to ensure planners remain at the forefront of their profession. FPSB Ireland has been proactive in preparing its CFP professionals for these changes.
Diversity is also a priority. With women currently representing 23% of CFP professionals in Ireland, FPSB Ireland aims to increase this figure to 28% by 2028. By mentoring and supporting women into leadership roles, FPSB Ireland is building a more inclusive, representative profession – one that reflects the people it serves.
At the same time, technology is playing an increasing role. As FPSB explores how artificial intelligence (AI) can enhance financial planning without losing the personal touch, Irish CFP professionals are contributing to global conversations about innovation in advice delivery. Tools like Psychology in Practice: Financial Planner Essentials, set for release in 2025, will further help professionals understand clients’ financial behaviours and motivations.
Celebrating the Community of CFP professionals in Ireland
The milestone of 1,000 CFP professionals in Ireland is more than just a number; it reflects a thriving, passionate community dedicated to making financial planning accessible and impactful. These professionals are not only delivering expert advice but also helping their clients achieve clarity, peace of mind, and a secure future.
This success stems from a culture of mentorship, support, and shared growth. Programmes like the mentorship initiative and efforts to promote diversity highlight how CFP professionals are working together to build a dynamic and inclusive future for financial planning.
As FPSB embarks on its next 20 years, Ireland’s CFP professionals will undoubtedly remain at the forefront of this journey, delivering life-changing advice and ensuring that financial planning remains a trusted resource for generations to come. Together, they are shaping a future where financial resilience and well-being is achievable for all.
