The New Retirement Reality Report

New research from FPSB Ireland and partners highlights a growing gap between pension participation and true retirement readiness among people in Ireland.

7th May 2026

FPSB Ireland is pleased to launch one of the most comprehensive studies of retirement readiness carried out in Ireland, developed by Amárach Research together with IOB, LIA and RPCI. The findings highlight a growing disconnect between pension participation and real preparedness for retirement.

While 74% of people say they manage their day-to-day finances well, 79% feel unprepared for retirement. This points to a clear issue. The gap is no longer about whether people are saving, it is about whether they understand what those savings will deliver in practical terms.

Too many people continue to focus on a pension “pot”, rather than the income it will generate and the lifestyle it needs to support. On average, expected retirement income falls short of what is required to maintain living standards, leaving many facing difficult decisions later in life.

This research reinforces the importance of professional financial planning. Clear, trusted advice helps people understand their options, make informed choices earlier, and plan for a retirement that reflects both their financial needs and their life goals.

At FPSB Ireland, we are committed to raising standards and building trust in financial planning. By supporting the development of highly qualified professionals, we aim to ensure more people across Ireland have access to the clarity and guidance they need to prepare with confidence.
